Crafting the Façade

Wood (2016)

This winter semester 2016-17, the third semester of the Erasmus+ program “Crafting the Façade re-use, re-invent, re-activate” that is coordinated by the University of Liechtenstein in cooperation with the Academie van Bouwkunst, Amsterdam and the Mackintosh School of Architecture, Glasgow, is held in Liechtenstein with the material focus on wood. The goal of the workshop, which is an essential part of the project studios, is to get in touch with wooden façades. In the first part of the workshop, contemporary and historical wooden buildings of the region are surveyed and the façades are drawn by hand in section and elevation in scale 1:10 to 1:5 in mixed teams.

In the second part of the workshop, students experiment with structural elements in scale 1:1. With wooden planks and small sized beams constructions are developed that are able to serve as roof as well as walls. These prototypes underline the experimental approach of the whole project and mark the starting point for the building of the new model workshop of the University of Liechtenstein, which will be built by students in the next summer.
